Well, here it comes again. Earth Day will be celebrated on
April 22, 2023 as it is every year. Already every news outlet is pushing their
stories and announcements.
But what, exactly, is Earth Day and can it really do any
good?
Earth Day celebrates its 52nd birthday, this
year. That’s right. Every year since 1970, the 22nd of April has
been set aside as a very special day to dedicate our attention to our very
troubled environmental situation and consider how each of us can be a part of
improving it.
Now, we hear a lot about Earth Day. There are unending
articles and posts written, you can buy t-shirts and hats, and there are
resources for every school, workplace, and home. But in the end, can it really
do any good? Will anything real be accomplished on April 22nd?
Well, you be the judge. The official Earth Day website lists
a number of amazing events that will be going on around our planet on that day.
·
United States: In Cape Coral, Florida,
they’ll be hosting the biggest clean-up event in history to clean up whatever’s
left after Hurricane Ian. They expect in excess of 5000 volunteers!
·
India: In the high-tourist area of Dal
Lake by the town of Srinagar in the Himalayas, you can expect to see crowds of
people with garbage bags. This year, they’re being declared an Earth Day Star
Village for their years of dedication to keeping their lake and surrounding
area clean.
·
Italy: In the nation’s beautiful capital
city of Rome, they host what is known as the “iconic Earth Day party”. It spans
five days and offers over 600 events of every description.
·
United Kingdom: In the streets of London,
there will be an event so huge that it goes simply by the name of “The Big
One”. A crowd of Earth supporters will march the streets in demonstration for a
cleaner Earth. Then they’ll join the London marathon.
·
Zimbabwe: This is only the second year
this African nation has celebrated Earth Day, but they’ll throw quite a fiesta
to commemorate the special day.
·
United States: In Hawaii, more than 700
divers will unite to perform a deep-dive cleanup, removing as much trash as
possible from their iconic blue oceans.

Pretty much every major city, as well as smaller cities and
towns, will be doing something for Earth Day. And the good news is, most of it
will be productive and forward moving. More than just talk, much of it will
involve cleaning up of tons of trash, planting of trees, and other exciting and
progressive activities. There will also be many opportunities to educate
children and adults on all the ways we can keep the Earth sustainable for generations
to come.
So, wherever on this amazing planet you happen to be on
April 22nd, 2023, and whatever you choose to do for our earth,
remember that all over the globe, you’ll be celebrating, hand-in-hand, with
millions of your friends for a green and beautiful future for us all.
(P.S. The only thing I ask is, whatever event you choose to
participate in, make sure you’re using the provided litter barrels for your
wrappers, etc.)
